MSDE MSDE = Microsoft SQL Server Database Engine: SQL Server version with limited
database management functions.
Operating system Computer program that controls the availability and operation of hardware resources,
e.g. RAM, central control unit (CPU), hard disk memory and connected devices
(peripherals). The operating system is the basis for any application software.
Well-know operating systems are: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Mac OS, LINUX and
UNIX
RAM Acronym for Random Access Memory. Generally, RAM describes a volatile storage
medium for writing and reading data.
Registry file A central, hierarchical Windows database which stores information necessary to
configure the computer system (users, applications, hardware).
The registry file includes information and settings that Windows accesses constantly
during operation, e.g. user profiles, installed programs and document types, folder
properties, program icons.
Setup
When installing software, a special program copies the program files onto the
computer. This program is called Setup, installation routine or program.
Generally, the computer must be restarted to complete the installation – during the
restart, the operating system registers the new program files.
SQL Structured Query Language; SQL is a standardised scripting language. Database
instructions can be written very easily.
SQL Server 2005 Express License-free database environment Successor to MSDE 2000, but with less limitations.
System administrator The person responsible for managing computers or computer systems. The system
administrator creates user accounts and passwords, adjusts security policies, controls
memory allocation and protects the computer from unauthorised access (viruses,
malicious programs, Trojan horses).
USB Acronym for Universal Serial Bus. Acronym for Universal Serial Bus. Serial bus with a
bandwidth of 1.5 megabits per second (Mbps) which is used to connect peripheral
devices.
With USB up to 127 peripheral devices can be connected via a single host controller,
e.g. external CD-ROM drives, printers, modems, mouse, keyboard.
